Child’s Winter Coat

Last year I disintegrated my sister’s old wool winter jacket (she let me, I promise) in order to reuse the lining for my red winter coat. Originally, I planned to use the wool for my nephew’s medieval clothes, but when I had the vlieseline (?) removed, it was too sticky on the wrong side. So I saved it in my stash. When I found this fluffy faux fur at Panduro, I knew just what to use it for! It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die!

I made a new pattern, tracing the outer lines from my son’s favourite jacket, but adding one centimeter at every side, except at the bottom, where I added one decimeter.  I thought about hiding a zipper behind a flap (?) and adding fancy metal buttons, that my son adores, but it seemed too intricate to sew and for a child to put on by himself.

I removed the old pockets and used this part for arms. Unfortunately the fabric behind the pocket seams had a lighter colour, which I unsuccessfully tried covering up with black ink. Obviously the ink reflects sunlight very well… I had to make some piecing together, as you see.

When he first tried the jacket on, he began crying and wouldn’t try it again for a few days. Today, I realized that there was a needle left in the faux fur. After removing it, he loved this jacket. He described it as “Awesome! Cozy!”. I am so pleased!

Mysig!” Jag är så glad!

For Christmas gift, I made a pyjamah, tracing his favourite pair. He loves the fact that it is a dress with pockets

Blouse out of a Shirt

My father does not care about clothes. This high quality shirt,  made of fine Egyptian cotton, was damaged while  carrying wood. It felt wrong to just throw it away. I thought about just using the unstained parts, but then only the back and the collar remained, so the shirt has been lying in my stash for one year now, awaiting the serendipity.

I often wore my historical clothing at home before becoming a mother. Now I have hardly worn anything historical for two years for fear of having it stained or torn and because of the impracticality (it is quite hard to crawl around on the floor and under furniture, wearing floor length skirts). One week ago the need for wearing something historical grew too great and I decided to wear Edwardian clothing for the Christmas dinner at work. Since I ended up sharing table with people who did not know about my interests, nobody understood that my strange hair and clothing was historical and I just felt awkward. I decided that it was time to make something historical that I could wear at home – practical for the sake of my son and nice looking for my sake. This was the perfect purpose for the damaged shirt!

I decided to refurnish it – I took everything apart and switched sides for the front parts, so that the worst parts were placed at the sides, about the hight of the waistline. The front parts were sewn together and then the armholes made a deep neckline, that I needed to hide.

I used the pieces from the top of the back, to fill the neckline.

Since this blouse should not fit closely,  I made straight seams in the sides and cut armholes. Then i started decorating the neckline with the help of my sewing machine.  Because of the different layering along the neckline, the seams ended up very uneven, and I found myself masking my mistakes by adding more and more decorating seams.

Then I gathered the top and bottom of the arms, so that the became poofy. I reinserted the the original cuffs, but shortened them and  used the wrong side out, as this was less stained.

The stains remain, but you just see them when looking for them. As I made this blouse in a hurry, there is a vast amount of mistakes, but as I am to wear it at home, I am quite happy with the outcome.

Medievalish

Two years ago, we planned on going to the Medieval Week at Visby together with my brother and my sisters family.  At the eleventh hour, I noticed that we had booked the ferry ticket and hotel nights for the wrong week.  Oh, the horror.  We comforted ourselves by going to the beautiful castle of Tjolöholm instead, where there was a Jane Austen display. My nieces have been very keen on experiencing the Medieval week though. I had no vacation this summer, so Visby was out of the question, but I had time for a day at the medieval fair at Söderköpings gästabud.

With a tiny bit of help from me, my nieces made their own gowns – all from cutting to sewing. I am so proud of them! We used fabric from my stash. The green cotton was initially blue, but became green when I was trying to dye it black for the Scary Robe. The pink linen was a huge table cloth. The dresses are made from rectangles and triangles. As the fabric is so unmedieval, the girls went all in by using Tanzanian wooden belts fort decoration. I think that they look like fantasy princesses!

Linen kirtle and liripipe hood out of soft wool

They asked me several times what our boy would wear. Eventually I could not resist making a little kirtle for him, out of an old linen skirt.

Earlier, we worn the cheapest underwear, made out of old cotton bed sheets. At our last stay at the Medieval week though, I bought linnen. During my internships far away from home, I spent the lonely evenings hand stitching a new shirt and a pair of breeches for my husband. I made a new chemise for myself the last night, on machine. I am quite proud of that I succeeded in making alterations for my husbands cotehardie. I made it for him ten years ago, when he was quite slender. Since he began bodybuilding, he has not been able to get into these clothes again. Astonishingly, I seem to have been wise enough to save broad seam allowances, so that I could make both the torso and sleeves wider. After adding sleeve gussets at the shoulders, he was even able to move!

New underwear: linen chemise, shirt, breeches and a little kirtle for the boy

The day at Söderköping was cosy. Off course, it could not compare with Visby, but our boy was happy in the clothes (he had my liripipe hood because of the cold weather) and my nieces were happy to play with him for a whole day.  The city is beautiful; the main part consists of pretty wooden houses from the 19th and early 20th century. The market was nice and I found a nice fabric for a new modern coat. All together, it was a nice day, in great company. Thank you, dear nieces!

Shelf, iPad Case and a Quilt

Shelf

Above the baby’s changing table (likewise our washer), we need a shelf. I bought the cheapest shelf I could find, at Clas Olssons (about 100 SEK) and painted it white. Then I drafted some friendly animals and painted these with acrylic colour. From a hook, I hung cuddly toys, originally made for the buggy, bought at a local second hand shop.

iPad Case

The iPad was in dire need of protection, so I used the bubble wrap in which it had been delivered and made a fabric case for this and yet another case out of a table tablet. It is closed with push buttons.

Quilted Bedspread

After several years of struggle (or lack of inspiration) I have also finished a bedspread, made from leftovers after different dress projects etc.  I copied the pattern from my grandmother’s beautiful homemade bedspread, bud did not have the patience to use as small pieces. The last big pieces added are old curtains, perfect for covering the bed’s sides.

If I had done this again, I would have skipped the bright red fabric, as it certainly does not match the rest. It represents a lovely memory though…

Regency Pregnancy and Nursing Gown

As I suppose that my body shape will not be what it used to be for a long time, I wanted to make a modest gown for the last part of my pregnancy and the nursing period. I do not know if the fabric is accurate for regency fashion, but as I still have several metres left, I used the striped cotton fabric yet again!

I used a bodice, where the lining is laced in the front and the dress fabric is gathered with drawstrings. I was inspired by many different vintage gowns, among which are these:

Fishu and Cap

For the modest motherly look, I needed a fishu for the neck line and a cap. The fishu will go well together with many of my regency dresses. There is a fantastic blog post about fishus here.

My main inspiration for the cap was this one, as it has no laces or expensive fabrics that would match poorly with my crude dress fabric. In my parents basement, there is a cupboard where they put old clothes, curtains and bed sheets, which have forfeited their purpose but could perhaps find a new use later on. Last week I dug deep and found an old, stained shirt with just enough unstained fabric for making a cap and a fishu!

This is how it came out. I think that you can figure out how it is done by yourselves, so I will not linger at that.

The finished gown with fishu and cap

I did not believe that you were interested in construction process of this one, as it is very similar to my other regency gowns. Here is how it is put on, anyway.

My new hometown, Västervik, is really beautiful this time of year. Maybe these pictures might tempt you to come and visit this dear part of Sweden?

YWU Competition Entry – Regency Lady Revived

Ten years ago I bought lots of a blue ”synthetic silk” fabric. Already by then, I thought that it would be perfect for a V-lined regency gown, but I was not a confident pattern maker by then, so when I couldn’t find any suitable pattern, it was stowed away.

Thanks to Pinterest and many helpful blogposts, I could at last decipher how the V-lined gowns were constructed. When I also stumbled over this lovely portrait of Tatyana Borisovna Potemkina, I knew that this gown would be my entry in this year’s competition.

I needed better underwear, so I started with making chorded stays (and because I hate hand sewing, I cheated in every way, where there weren’t visible seams), a new chemise and petticoat – faithful to my tradition, I only used old bedsheets.

Chemise, chorded stays and petticoat

Before we left Denmark for the busy holidays in Sweden, I had made a pattern for the bodice, but I had not yet figured out whether the lining should have as much fabric as the outside, or if the outside should be pleated and then stitched down to the lining. After examining some photos of vintage dresses, I ended up using the same pattern for both lining and main fabric. There is now room for all bust sizes! The skirt also ended up being quite voluminous, because I had to fully trust my instincts when I cut the fabric and pleated it to the top, without my dear mannequin at hand.

I had the most fun constructing the sleeves. It was only a bit time consuming to hand stich and arrange the pleating and the thin strings. The trickiest part by far was to make the regency hair. I had to make my own hair pieces, with much help from YWU articles and blogs.

When my mother heard that I needed lightweight cotton for the chemisette she bestowed a sleeveless blouse on me. It consisted mainly of lace, so there was not much fabric to work with. I laid it aside for some months, hoping for a good idea. Our last night before going home for the Christmas Holidays (where my gown waited), I finally had inspiration for the chemisette and cut the blouse to pieces. I made the neck-part on the bus ride to Sweden and then I used the remaining decimeters from the blouses’ shoulders, for fake sleeves. On its own, it does not look much like a historic chemisette, but when only the neck part and the arm pieces are seen under the gown, I think it looks right.

We were both sick and tired when my husband took this photography. Afterwards I found out that we had not arranged the fabric volumes to its advantage. You have to look at the other pictures, from our summer photo session, to see how the dress is really meant to look like.

And can you believe it? I won, alongside these incredibly talented seamstresses! Crazy…

Becoming a Doctor and Some Smaller Projects

This Wednesday I had my very last exam and I passed. Crazy! Now there is only the Hippocratic oath, by the end of the month, between the world of medical doctorship and myself. It has been a hard ride, with many sleepless nights, tears of anguish and boring “holidays” filled with studies. But now it has finally come to an end. Wow.

Wow.

This semester has been about as tough as the others and I have not had time for bigger projects (except for grandmothers wedding gown). Here comes some small projects that I have used as distraction, though.

I needed a chemisette for completing Tatyana Borisovna Potemkina’s look. I got material from my ever benevolent mother, who sacrificed a sleeveless blouse for this purpose. I sew it on our bus trip back to Sweden, for the Christmas holidays, so nothing is documented, but before and after.

The blouse before the transformation // Blusen innan förvandlingen

We were so horribly tired, my husband and I, when it was time for photographing the whole look, so the dress does not fit as well as it should. But you have seen the earlier photos, where it is perfect, haven’t you?

My brother has grown an impressive moustache. It needs some special care. I made a mustache net for his birthday. Therefor I took one of my hair nets and attached an elastic ribbon. I hid the knots underneath some manly bows.

The case for my cell phone was in a horrible state when I should go to my last exam. Because we had the opportunity to use the Internet, while interviewing and examining our patient, I felt that it would be directly disrespectful to use filthy, unhygienic case more. So I used an old scrap fabric (from the lampshade) to dress it up a bit. Sweet. Then I discovered that there was absolutely no time for checking stuff on the internet anyway, but I’m glad I now don’t have to feel gross when I want to use my cell phone.

After having made my Chinese silk dress, I found out that I maybe should have a fluffy petticoat underneath. I had some fabric at home, so I threw this together.

Fluffy petticoat // Fluffig underkjol

Today, I also made a bow tie for my husband, in the same fabric as the dress. We’ll see if he can wear it without suffocating.

Bow tie // Fluga

Here is a good tutorial for making bow ties, with a pattern. I had no idea how to tie it, so I found a tutorial for that too.

I also wanted a matching purse, so I took the few scraps left of the silk and cut an old plastic portfolio to pieces. The plastic stabilizes the front, back and lid. There was not enough fabric to match the patterns. The lining is from the same fabric as the petticoat. I was able to make a little pocket at the back of the purse, by overlapping the lining and the main fabric.  For shoulder strap, I used a plastic necklace bought at a Second Hand store many years ago. I was in a real hurry, so I cut the fabric and threw the purse altogether by instinct. In spite of this carelessness, I think the purse looks really nice.

Inauguration/Hippocratic Oath, the 27th of January

Yesterday was the Inauguration/Hippocratic Oath. Today I am exhausted and so inexplicably happy! It is a big thing to swear to always serve others, always do your best and to never make any difference between patients. But its a good thing.

I was very happy that my parents were able to come and celebrate with me! They have been a huge support to me during this education.

My greatest support, though, has been my everpatient and loving husband. Thank you so much!

Off course there have been many heroes involved during these six years! Among them, I have to mention the rest of my family, the family of my husband and my dear Århus-friends Svea, Ingeborg, Camilla, Frida, Hildegunn, Paulina, Abi and Christina and all other lovely people spread out in over Sweden and the rest of the world. Thank you so much for not giving up on me, when I’m in anguish after many sleepless nights and when I reject fun things because of studies. Thank you for all nice distractions that have made surviving possible. I love you and am so thankful for having got to know you! Hope that we will see each other again.

This post ended up being more cheesy than I could have ever imagined. Perhaps it’s because of the cheesy music in the background or just because of that I really have so much to be thankful for.

Have a good day!

Grandmothers bridal gown goes goth!

The history of a dress

brudparMy dear grandmother got married 1951. Her bridal gown was made from a beautiful, white silk brocade. Some years later, she dyed and reconstructed the dress, in order to wear it to her sister’s wedding.

About 50 years later, my brother and sister and me, made our own fantasy movie – Snow White And The Skizophrenic Maniac – where my sister, who played the beautiful, wicked queen, wore  the beautiful, salmon coloured dress. Unfortunately, I don’t have any picture of either my grandmother or my sister in the dress, but I have picture of myself wearing the dress to a costume party, playing another queen.

Soon, hopefully, I will get my medical degree. Then I would like to wear something really festive and elegant. For some years I have dreamed of reconstructing and dying the dress once more to suit my body and skin type. This fall, I finally had the courage to rip all of the seams and get to it, with the goal of wearing the dress at the great party.

Construction

fullsizerenderI wanted to remove the awkward shoulder straps and tape at the top. I really love the construction at the waist, so I kept the dress as it was from the waist downward, but ripped all seams in the bodice.

img_4804
I reduced the bust width with 10 cm, but only 2 cm at the waist.

I wanted a sturdy material underneath the silk, so I traced the pattern of the bodice to a discarded pair of jeans (thanks, bro) and fitted the pieces over my victorian corset.  As you see, there was some discrepancy between the measures of the original wearer’s bust and mine. I was astonished to see that this tall and, in later years very sturdy grandmother of mine, had almost the same measurement around the waist as myself. Then I was reminded that she both was above average height (172 cm) and had to bear viscous comments in the farming community, about how skinny she was in her youth.

When I had finally got the right fit, I sew the pieces together and put boning in the seam allowances. In the front, I used spiral steal. Because I wanted as little bulk as possible, I decided not to hem the boning channels. The edges won’t fray much anyway, facing the dresses inside.

img_4829

I had planned on dying the dress in a darker red, but discovered some some marks that couldn’t be removed and considered dying the dress black.  I don’t own any enormous pots and I didn’t want to put the beautiful silk gown in its then disintegrated state, in a washing machine, so I couldn’t dye the fabric at home anyway.

Suddenly, I was called to interviews in Sweden, for my medical internship. These interviews were close to my parents home, so now was my chance to dye the dress! It seamed a bit disrespectful to dye my grandmother’s bridal gown black, so I bought the red textile colour (Dylon was the only one I could lay my hands on with that short notice) and left for Sweden the very next day.

I started with soaking the dress and was amazed to find that it looked like intestines…

farga-tyg

Then I started cooking. I thought I was very careful indeed – I used more colour than prescribed and I kept the fabric in motion most of the time at the stove. When the dress had dried, though, I found that the dress had not aquired the burgundy red I aimed for and that the stains had got an even deeper colour than the rest of the dress. When I discovered something resembling burning marks, I decided to go for the black colour, in order to salvage the remains of my dream dress.

I went to the local grocery store and hope to find Herdins textile hand wasch-colour for natural fibers, but only found Herdins “wash it back – black”, that could only be used in washing machine. This seemed like a risky project, so I was not too glad to spend more money on it. Then my sweet mother stepped in and financed the purchase.  Anxiously I put the fine silk in the washing mashine and waited for my doom. The result of this colouring was amazing!

Back in Denmark, I did not only have a future job to look forward to, but also a beautiful fabric to work with. I sewed the pieces together according to the boned bodice and made a heart-form at the bust lining.

After having lined the upper part with the remains of the original hemline, the dress was finished.

Shorts out of T-shirts

Shorts For Bouldering /Klättershorts

IMG_3728My dear husband’s birthday was last week. For some time now I have thought about making elastic shorts for his climbing and now I finally pulled myself together and made them. As I wanted to surprise him, I put them together while he was away climbing for three hours. Therefore I was not able to adjust the fit, so the result was as messy as can be expected. Because of the incredible comfort, he loved them from the beginning, even though they made him look twice as heavy.  After some adjustments they are actually both practical, comfortable and look okay.

FullSizeRender 7First, I cut four almost identical panels out of two old T-shirts, from my own poofy-pants-pattern. Then I sewed them together in the front and the back.

FullSizeRender 5

I inserted a pocket in one of the sides. For this I used a T-shirt arm. I tucked the pocket edge in under the hem and stitched these together. Then I sewed both sides of the shorts together.

IMG_3707

I also put a pocket at the back of the patternfree part. I used the original hem of the bottom of the T-shirt for the pocket opening.

IMG_3714

At last, I cut out two more pieces, from another T-shirt and used this for the hemline of the trousers. Inside of this, I put an elastic.

FullSizeRender 2

This is what they looked like in the front… / Så här såg de ut framifrån… FullSizeRender 3

… and this is how the back looked. /… och så här såg de ut bakifrån.

The shorts looked horrible on the recipient of the gift. The two major problembs were that they were far too wide (because I would rather adjust this afterwards, than having to scrap them if they were too small) and they were quite indecent in front… Suddenly I understood why designers usually don’t use jersey for  male trousers.

FullSizeRender 4

Therefore I cut another ancient T-shirt and made a kind of underpants out of it.

I also made two folds in the back of the shorts, to enhance the fit. Then I placed the underpants on the inside and took a shortcut – I just made a straight seem, without even folding the raw edge. We’ll see how long this lazy work lasts.

Fortunately, the shorts seem to endure many stange positions. Both the seamstress and the climber are as happy as can be!

I have wanted a frame for my fantasy metal musician for ten years,  but have been too greedy to let a real frame maker make one for me. When I was at IKEA, I found black plastic frames for 40 SEK and thought that it at least was worth to give it a try.

I painted the rounded part of the frame with gold colour and the white passpartou with yellow water colour. I am quite happy with the result.

Last autumn, I made this picture for my father, illustrating his famous quote: “I’ll strike from the hip”. It was much appreciated.

Trousers for Climbing

A great, lovely climbing hall has opened, close to our home, so I wanted a new pair of trousers for climbing. I used my own pattern for poofy trousers and an old bed sheet in a colour that hurts the eyes, just as it should when in this sport.

IMG_2570
// Because I like it the bigger the trousers are, I added some extra centimeters at the bottom. Afterwards I have realized that it is less practical though...
IMG_2572
// 1) After having sewn the front pieces and back pieces together, I tore fabric parts for the pockets, which are folded rectangles 2) These were put in, up behind the corners of the front part. 3) Then I folded the seam allowance, so that the front layer of the pocket became triangular and the back layer rectangular and thus formed a part of the upper side seam.

What set these poofy trousers apart from my earlier is that these have nice pockets and open with a button that goes through one of the pockets.

IMG_2586
// Here the pockets are sewn into the trousers and the side seams are ready. A buttonhole will be put in the front part of the pocket, which is left open in the top.
IMG_2587
// At the waist, I wanted a border, similar to my earlier pair of poofy trousers. I made the border and formed the bottom part last.

Because the trousers already had a crazy colour, I followed through and decorated with a teenagerish contrasting black seam and a bling-bling button which I found among inherited sewing stuff.

IMG_2635
// On the top, I fastened the boarder of the trousers with a decoration seam.
IMG_2636
// I forgot to use the buttonhole-advice for the sewing machine, så the button hole did not end up as I had planned, but I looks nice in some kind of way. When the trousers are opened, the pocket is opened and in this way increase the waist circumference.
IMG_2639
Nedtill fäste jag ett resårband. // I put an elastic band in the bottom seam.

I tested the trousers in the climbing hall last week. They are so comfortable, but I’m ashamed to admit that the seam actually ripped open in the crotch! Luckily, I had zigzagged and that seam was ok. When the trousers are at the right height, I can move fully, but then they slide down some centimeters and then it suddenly is very difficult to stretch out ones legs. Therefor I put a safety pin at the button hole, so that the button stays in its inner position and keep the trousers tight, as I intended. This works fine and hopefully they won’t rip open again. I have understood why all trousers have zippers, though.

When we climbed last time, I was reminded our backpack for shoes, tape, chalk etc., was gasping for its last breath. I repaired it and pimped it up with some scrap fabric from earlier projects.
